The decision by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) to reopen the 20-year-old inquiry against PML-Q leaders Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain and Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi is one that political watchdogs in the near future Connecting to Scenarios.
The Chaudhry brothers have challenged the NAB’s decision in the Lahore High Court. He is accused of abuse of power and making assets in excess of income. In 2017 and 2018, it was recommended to close three cases of investigation in this regard, but now these inquiries have been reopened.
The Chaudhry brothers, in their petition filed in the court, said that the NAB chairman had no evidence to reopen the inquiries and there was no justification for NAB action against them under the Money Laundering Act. The petitioners also say that the credibility and impartiality of the NAB is a matter of public debate as it is used for political engineering.
The decision to reopen the inquiry against him was taken to keep him “captive and imprisoned” and to limit the role of his political party. A statement issued by the NAB in response to the Chaudhry brothers’ stance said that the NAB chairman had not ordered any new inquiry against the Chaudhry brothers. Old cases can’t be made into cupboards indefinitely.
We will not discuss the credibility and performance of the NAB at this time. The Chaudhry brothers have a new and politically effective voice in the ongoing debate. More important is why the time was chosen to reopen the inquiry against the Chaudhry brothers.
Prior to the 2018 general elections, most of the “potential” candidates who were included in the PTI or made its political ally were under investigation by the NAB. , Were stopped or put on hold.
These “potential” candidates were recruited or allied by Jahangir Tareen, a close ally of Prime Minister Imran Khan. It is also a fact that due to this strategy of Jahangir Tareen, governments were formed in the center of PTI, Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The PML-Q is the most important political ally of the PTI as a political party. Due to the votes of PML-Q in the Punjab Assembly, PTI government has been formed in Punjab.
This government can end with a hint from the Chaudhry brothers. Last month, when Chaudhry Pervez Elahi, who is also the Speaker of the Punjab Assembly, met Rana Sanaullah of the PML-N, it became clear that something was not normal. If the reopening of NAB inquiries against the Chaudhry brothers is not related to the political situation in the country, it means that other files lying in the cupboards will also have to be removed.
If not, then questions will arise. In any case, it will have an effect on the politics of the country.
A major inquiry into the sugar and flour scandal is also underway against Jahangir Tareen, the architect of the “potential” political strategy to field candidates. With the re-opening of the inquiry against the Chaudhry brothers, all the “potential” candidates must have felt intimidated and insecure.
Suppose the NAB is working exclusively for the “State of Pakistan”. It had no political role even before the 2018 general elections and still has no political role, so of course it should not be concerned with the political implications of these cases and inquiries.
We do not agree with the Chaudhry brothers that even if the NAB is used for political purposes, the NAB’s actions will still have political implications. Either the Chaudhry brothers will come under pressure, as they themselves are saying, all this is being done to bring them back. Or they will not come under pressure. Something will happen anyway.
Jahangir Tareen, who gathers potential candidates and politicians, will also decide something like the Chaudhry brothers in the inquiry against him. Granted, the NAB has no role in politics, but it must be acknowledged that potential candidates and influential politicians who have won elections have a huge role to play in Pakistan’s politics. If they can end NAB cases or inquiries against them first, they will still have the political clout to use them to deal with these cases and inquiries. Accountability laws since 1947 and NAB Such institutions are doing their job for the “state”.
Despite this, political changes are taking place in Pakistan and political evolution is also going on. Pakistan’s political forces have turned the contradictions of their opponents into their own politics. The old files in the NAB’s cupboards are a historical record of such contradictions. The contradictory orders to open and close the files are, in fact, the real contradictions that are causing evolution in politics.
An interesting game is about to begin in Pakistan’s politics. Although the NAB is working for the state, it will have political implications anyway
