The brother of a PhD student who committed suicide at the hands of a professor has revealed that Nadia had tried to commit suicide before. It may be recalled that a day earlier, a web report had claimed that a student named Nadia Ashraf had committed suicide out of frustration with the atrocities of her PhD supervisor Dr Iqbal Chaudhry.
The report said that Nadia Ashraf had not been able to complete her PhD in the last 15 years and it was claimed that Nadia Ashraf was allegedly telling her close friends that ‘Dr Iqbal Chaudhry should not let me complete my PhD’. The report also quoted the deceased student as saying that when she took a job in another research organization, Dr Iqbal Chaudhry tried to terminate her job there as well.
After the report came to light, users on social media started expressing their grief over Nadia Ashraf’s death and demanding justice for her and the hashtag Justice for Nadia became a top trend. He said that Nadia Ashraf had enrolled in M.Phil PhD in 2007 under the supervision of Dr Amin Surya and after the departure of Dr Amin Surya, she was completing her PhD under the supervision of Prof. Dr Iqbal Chaudhry.
But yesterday she committed suicide in her flat. Now, Nadia’s brother Shahbaz said, “The first shock we felt was when Nadia tried to commit suicide for the first time by cutting her wrists two years ago. According to Shahbaz, Nadia did this when a student who got lower marks than her was given a PhD degree, which did not bear the shock of Nadia because she was supposed to get a degree in 2016 but her According to him, Nadia was also admitted to a psychiatric hospital in Karachi where she was treated for some time and doctors told us that she had schizophrenia.
