ISLAMABAD: The Accountability Court (AC) has issued an arrest warrant for former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in the Tosha Khana reference and rejected his plea for arrest of former Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani.
Approving the plea for immunity, he directed all the accused to appear before it on June 11. The hearing of the Tosha Khana reference against former president Asif Ali Zardari and two former prime ministers Nawaz Sharif and Yousuf Raza Gilani was held on Friday by accountability court judge Syed Asghar Ali. Sharif and Yousuf Raza Gilani are accused of receiving gifted vehicles and the accountability court had on May 15 issued summons to the accused at the preliminary hearing.
The court had summoned Asif Ali Zardari, Yousuf Raza Gilani and Nawaz Sharif. Former Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani appeared in the court while former President Asif Ali Zardari and former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif did not appear in the court. Gilani and Abdul Ghani Majeed were arrested while NAB prosecutor Muzaffar Ali also sought arrest warrants for Asif Ali Zardari and Nawaz Sharif. The NAB prosecutor said that Nawaz Sharif and Asif Ali Zardari received summons at their residences.
While Anwar Majeed is undergoing treatment at the hospital, summons were not received there. Sanitation lawyers said that Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani and Abdul Ghani Majeed have appeared, accused Anwar Majeed is undergoing treatment at the hospital and they are not allowed to travel. The defense counsel said that if the accused appear, they are allowed to be present. If the chairman NAB has not issued an arrest warrant, how can the NAB prosecutor ask for an arrest? Judge Asghar Ali remarked that Asif Ali Zardari’s The summons was complied with by the watchman on which the Deputy Prosecutor General NAB gambled He said that according to the law, the employee of the accused can be complied with the summons.
The summons of Asif Ali Zardari was received. The court remarked that only the accused who appeared would be required to appear. The NAB prosecutor said that Non-bailable arrest warrants of Asif Ali Zardari and Nawaz Sharif should be issued on which Asif Ali Zardari’s lawyer said that Asif Ali Zardari is undergoing treatment in the hospital. Asif Ali Zardari’s lawyer submitted a request for exemption from attendance which was accepted by the court. The judge said that he was only exempting Asif Ali Zardari from attendance. At the next hearing, Asif Ali Zardari should appear before the court in any case.
The court asked who appeared on behalf of Nawaz Sharif. On which NAB Prosecutor Sardar Muzaffar Abbasi said that no one appeared on behalf of Nawaz Sharif. The accountability court issued a warrant for the arrest of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif on non-appearance despite summons and summoned Asif Ali Zardari on June 11.
